Genres of writing assist us in specifically communicating our message, intention or purpose. When we consider our audience (including ourselves) the idea of genre immediately takes effect. Poetry brings a flare of freedom, which can translate itself into writing which can expressive, narrative, or lyrical. In the same way an image, whether it be a photo or painting, can create a visual story or representation.
Regardless of the genre, a letter, picture, poem, essay or song can all be used for the same purpose, but with careful consideration, they can become more effective than using the same genre. With a practically endless stream of genres and modes of writing, an author or writer can take a message and truly fulfill a desired purpose such as persuading, informing expressing or entertaining.
In our contemporary society, the most popular form of communication has become digital writing. There are many kinds of digital genre, including images, websites, facebook pages, blogs, glogs, online presentations, and the list goes on. With this new form of genre emerging, the culture around us is beginning to change and use the digital world to communicate effective, strong messages.
